The title comes from the fact that the main character throws a handful of coffee outside of the mine every time he enters hoping he will be protected by a dark spirit. He got the idea from reading National Geographic. Miners in Bolivia give offerings to Satan because he "rules" the underworld. At the end, He realizes that he doesn't need to give any offering because he can stand up for himself.
